Xolo Maridue?a, the first new addition to the Suicide Squad cast, has been confirmed.
The Suicide Squad premiered at the red carpet of the premiere of Suicide Squad 2 on August 6th, 2018.
On Monday, DC fans received some much-anticipated news when rumors surfaced that Cobra Kai actor Xolo Mariduea was in negotiations to appear in HBO Max’s forthcoming Blue Beetle film. The prospect of seeing Mariduea portray Jaime Reyes — a figure that has long piqued the interest of comic book readers — has already enthralled the Internet, but others were waiting for confirmation that he would be performing the role. Thankfully, that proof came on Monday night, when Mariduea attended the red carpet premiere of The Suicide Squad. According to a tweet from Aaron Couch of The Hollywood Reporter, Mariduea found out he had gotten the part the night before during a meal with director Angel Manuel Soto and Warner Bros. executives.

Following the death of Ted Kord, the Blue Beetle film will follow Jaime, who is the third figure to take on the role of Blue Beetle in the comics. According to rumors around Mariduea’s casting, the film will begin shooting early next year.
Jaime’s stint substantially altered the Blue Beetle mythology, revealing that the Egyptian scarab that grants the hero abilities is really alien in origin and providing a kind of extraterrestrial suit of armor. Jaime was created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hammer. Jaime was a member of the Justice League, Justice League International, Teen Titans, Young Justice, and Secret Six in the future. This will be the character’s second live-action appearance, since he was previously played by Jaren Brandt Bartlett on Smallville. In animation, the character has appeared in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Young Justice: Invasion, DC Super Hero Girls, and Justice League Action.
For years, fans have speculated about the nature of Blue Beetle’s contemporary live-action debut, with numerous interpretations of the mantle and its many characters in the works. In 2017, there was talk of a Blue Beetle and Booster Gold team-up film, which would have centered on the Ted Kord version of the character. In 2018, a Jaime Reyes film was reported to be in the works, with Dunnet-Alcocer engaged to write the screenplay. In January 2023, an HBO Max series starring Jaime was also reported.
Blue Beetle would be one of many DC films scheduled to premiere on HBO Max, with a Batgirl film starring Leslie Grace and a Static Shock film previously confirmed as HBO Max exclusives.
In an interview earlier this year, Warner Bros. Picture Group Chair Toby Emmerich said, “HBO Max offers a tremendous potential for DC.” “It enables us to produce high-quality mid-budget superhero films that reintroduce lesser-known DC characters while also allowing us to cross over stand-out characters from our larger films into new series. Our fans will have additional opportunities to explore the DC multiverse and experience more fantastic tales with these favorite characters now that the DC movie world is linked to Max.”
